Info
Home to the Sydney Turf Club, Canterbury Racecourse is New South Wales’ leading venue for midweek racing. It is located just 11km from Sydney’s CBD, roughly a 15-minute drive, and sits directly opposite Canterbury Railway Station, making it very convenient for the public.
Canterbury is the only racecourse in NSW to host night racing. The 1,567m circuit is fully surrounded by a modern floodlighting system that illuminates the entire track and creates the spectacle of racing under lights. The long, sweeping turns often favour front-running horses before they straighten into the 306m home straight.
Compared to many metropolitan racecourses, Canterbury is relatively compact, giving spectators an intimate experience with the racing action happening just metres away.
Barriers:
1000m – The start is on the course proper, with inside barriers holding a slight advantage over the 300m run before the long, sweeping final turn into the home straight.
1100m – Similar to the 1000m start, although the additional 100m slightly reduces the advantage of inside draws on the run to the final turn.
1200m – Races begin from a chute off the back straight, providing an opening run of around 500m. Barrier position has little influence at this distance.
1300m – These races follow the same setup as the 1200m, with an extra 100m added to the opening run before the first turn.
1500m – The start is from a chute just after the winning post, giving runners approximately 250m to find position before the first turn. Inside barriers are advantaged.
1900m – Runners begin near the top of the home straight just after the final turn, with around 300m before the first bend. Inside barriers have an advantage.
2600m – Starting on the course proper at the top of the back straight, runners have roughly 350m to settle before the first turn. Inside barriers are favoured.
2800m – Uses the same chute as the 1200m start and provides around 550m before the field reaches the first turn. Barrier position offers little advantage at this distance.
