Info
Geelong Racecourse is located around 75km south-west of Melbourne and is easily accessible by train, with the station positioned right beside the track. The venue is popular with racegoers thanks to its spacious layout, relaxed atmosphere, and generous picnic areas, along with three grandstands that cater comfortably to large crowds.
The track is designed in a wide oval shape, featuring long sweeping turns at each end of the lengthy straights. The home straight measures 400m and includes a gentle rise, while the full circuit stretches to a maximum distance of 2,043m. This expansive layout is well regarded as it allows every runner a genuine opportunity to compete fairly and finish strongly.
Each October, during the Victorian Spring Carnival, the racecourse hosts its feature event, the Group 3 Geelong Cup. Run over 2400m, it is the premier race at the venue and offers the winner automatic qualification for the Melbourne Cup. In recent years, the Geelong Cup has proven to be an excellent lead-up for international contenders and a reliable form reference for punters, with past winners such as Media Puzzle, Americain, and Dunaden going on to claim victory in the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November.
