Situated on the Castlereagh River in Coonamble, the Coonamble Racecourse can be found 551kms north-west of Sydney. Being surrounded by the Warrumbungle Ranges and the Western Plains of New South Wales gives the Coonamble Racecourse a special atmosphere of its own, especially in October at Coonamble Cup time when the locals form a hive of social excitement at the track. The course itself has a circumference of 1628m and inside barriers become important over shorter distances as jockeys have to negotiate their mounts through two turns before entering the 383m home straight.
